TIME Magazine features work of UC CAI PI Dr. Charles Chiu
In the May 15, 2017 issue of TIME, cover story “The World Is Not Ready for the Next Pandemic” suggests infectious diseases may be responsible for the next global pandemic, but science can play a role in combatting it. The article highlights UC CAI awardee Dr. Charles Chiu of UCSF and his work in genomic diagnosis, which involves sequencing all the genetic data in a patient sample in an effort to find all hidden pathogens, as a tool to curb the effect of potential future outbreaks.
The genetic sequence of a pathogen is a virtually fail-safe fingerprint, which is why tests like Chiu's can be so effective in diagnosing a single person's mystery illness. It's the diagnostic equivalent of fishing for germs with a huge net, instead of a single line. Genetic sequencing is especially valuable when an unknown pathogen starts killing people in droves.
